It’s not what you know that matters. It’s not even what you believe. It’s what you do.
Here at Bohlsen Group, we have the fortune to combine our knowledge and beliefs with our work, and we’ve been recognized as Indiana’s first certified B Corp because of it.
The B Corp Assessment challenges companies to think about their environmental impact, how they engage their people and client partners meaningfully, how they better the community and how they govern themselves and make the right decisions.
When Bohlsen Group started down the path of becoming a B Corp certified company, we took those components to heart. We explored how we could live out our individual and corporate values and beliefs through our everyday actions.
As Bohlsen Group President Vicki Bohlsen tells the story, the original plan wasn’t to become B Corp certified at all, but rather to use their assessment to gauge whether we were on the right track and explore some of the ways we could improve.
It turns out that we were very much on the right track – of the 200 points possible and the 80 needed to become B Corp certified, Bohlsen Group scored 100. By following our instincts and doing what we felt was right for our people, partners and community, we were already meeting many of the same standards as some of the world’s most admired brands.
In March 2015, we officially became B Corp certified and joined such companies as Etsy, Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s and New Belgium Beer as an organization that believes in using business as a force for good.
Our commitment to putting our values and beliefs into action is reflected in the people we hire, the clients we work with and the decisions we make every day. The B Corp standards have become our gut-check, and being named to the roster of the 2016 Best Places to Work because of some of our practices has affirmed we are continuing on the right path.
However, being a B Corp doesn’t simply mean making transparent, sustainable, employee-friendly decisions for our company. We believe we have an obligation to enable other businesses in Indianapolis to elevate their standards and practices.
In an effort to do that, Bohlsen Group staff can be seen volunteering in the community and mentoring students and young professionals entering the communications field. Vicki Bohlsen often shares her personal experience of leading a company through its evolution from a start-up to one of Indiana’s largest full-service marketing agencies.
To take the message of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and values-driven leadership to the next level, Bohlsen Group and long-time partner Pedrotti-Hays, Inc. have partnered to present a four-part series: Social Enterprise Power Plays beginning Tuesday, March 1. The series will progress from understanding the benefits of CSR and how to engrain it in your company culture to putting it into action in order to create enthusiastic fans.
