As we approach our sixth anniversary of serving the Indianapolis area as an integrated communications agency, we at Bohlsen Group realize we have more to be proud of than another year of award-winning campaigns, extensive community engagement and enhanced professional development; we are also celebrating our first anniversary as a B Corp certified business – the first in Indiana.
In the spring of 2015, Bohlsen Group joined Etsy, Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s and Hootsuite, among others, as a company focused on using business as a force for good. This certification is based on a number of different elements, including staff and client engagement, environmental responsibility, and commitment to community.
The numbers are in, and Bohlsen Group hit the ground running with its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, including health and wellness incentives for employees, paid volunteering hours, recycling and work from home options. In the past year, Bohlsen Group staff recycled more than 325 pounds of materials per month, utilized the treadmill desk for more than 3,500 minutes, and biked or walked to work 31 times per month.
Employees also spent more than 300 hours volunteering on company time. Spending time with local organizations, including groups like Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Girls Inc. and Eskenazi Health, our staff has developed a deeper appreciation for the community, its people, and our role as a business.
When we asked President Vicki Bohlsen how she’s seen the company change since becoming a B Corp, she remarked that company decisions have become simpler to make.
“Being B Corp certified has helped streamline internal decisions as it relates to hiring, culture, policies, and more,” Bohlsen said. “From an external perspective, it has helped with policies and best practices, but also determining good-fit clients.”
With the success of the first year and the enthusiasm for the new programs embraced by employees and management alike, it’s no surprise that Bohlsen Group decided to dedicate its annual Power Play Series to the topic of CSR. Due to interest from the community and subsequent questions, Bohlsen Group will share insights into the benefits of CSR and how to integrate it into company culture.
With our sights on even more community engagement, personal and professional growth, and environmental awareness, let’s cheers to another year of using business as a force for good!
